The Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Los Angeles, California will be hosting the revival run of the late Tom Eyen’s “Women Behind Bars” dark comedy play from 1/24/20-2/2/20. Scott Thompson is the director.

All shows are 18+ due to the content. It is a parody of the “women in prison” exploitation films dating back in the 1950s.

The show was originally an Off-Broadway production in 1975 starring Pat Ast as The Matron. Divine took over the role the following year and also starred in the 1977 London, U.K. version.

The 2020 cast is an impressive one:

Traci Lords as Gloria

Mink Stole as Granny

Suzie Kennedy as Cheri

Chi Chi DeVayne as Jo-Jo

Poppy Fields as Blanche

Tatiana Monteiro as Guadalupe

Thorgy Thor as Ada

Adrienne Couper Smith as Mary

Miss Coco Peru as Louise

Wesley Woods as The Man

Eureka O’ Hara (of Ru Paul’s Drag Race) as The Matron

We have a fondness for the women in prison genre here at W.W.D. Below are the trailers of some of our favorites.

The Big Bird Cage (1972)

The Big Doll House (1971)

Caged Heat (1974)

Chained Heat (1983)

Reform School Girls (1986) starring Wendy O. Williams and Pat Ast

The Gestapo’s Last Orgy (1977). This is drama, horror, and campy comedy combined so viewer discretion is advised
